FINANCIAL IMPACT:

DISCUSSION:

Caltrans District 5 covers the central coastal region of the State, including Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties. Caltrans is the owner and operator of the State Highway System. The Caltrans District 5 Active Transportation Plan will identify existing bicycle and pedestrian facilities and improvement needs on, across, and parallel to the State Transportation System.

The planning effort to develop this Active Transportation Plan is the first of its kind in the district and the state. This Plan will establish a district-wide vision and goals developed in coordination with its transportation partner agencies for a safe active transportation network supporting healthy communities for all users, especially disadvantaged communities. Caltrans District 5 has committed to strengthening and innovating how they engage with their community stakeholders throughout the Central Coast region. Caltrans launched the website https://bikewalkcentralcoast.mindmixer.com/ to share information about the plan and collect public input.

Active transportation needs and existing network gaps that surface from data collection, community input, and existing active transportation efforts will inform priority bicycle and pedestrian improvements and recommendations in the district. The presentation from Caltrans District 5 staff will familiarize Committee members with the planning effort.
