Blue Zones October 2020 Update


RECOMMENDED ACTION:
RECEIVE information about Blue Zones current programs and offerings.
SUMMARY:

The Committee will receive a presentation about current events from Kendra Howell, Senior Policy Lead of Blue Zones Monterey County.

DISCUSSION:

Kendra Howell, Senior Policy Lead of Blue Zones Monterey County, will present information about Blue Zones' joint effort with the Transportation Agency's Go831 program to promote the October Smart Commute Challenge. 

 

The Transportation Agency's Go831 program encourages activities that reduce congestion in Monterey County. The Go831 Smart Commute Challenge is open to anyone who lives or works in Monterey County and offers prizes to those who smart commute during the month of October. For this challenge "smart" commuting will include telework, walking and biking.

 

The Blue Zones Project is a community-by-community well-being improvement initiative designed to help people lead longer, better lives by making healthy choices easier. The initiative promotes simple permanent or semi-permanent changes to community, organization and home environments that support healthy lifestyle behaviors and habits based on cultures identified around the world that have high percentages of centenarians, labeled Blue Zones by the National Geographic. 

 

Current Blue Zone Monterey County efforts including creating a community safety education campaign that supports promoting walking and bicycling more, and Salinas’ Vision Zero effort to eliminate traffic related fatalities.
